2023-2024
NYU Shanghai Center for Business Education
and Research
Over the
past year, CBER has continued to excel in fostering a vibrant academic
environment, marked by our commitment to faculty research, the introduction of
business education, high-impact communication events, and meaningful industry
engagement. It is noticeable that we are
able to achieve those goal with limited budget.
In AY
2023-2024, CBER has hosted a series of seminars and conferences that have
fostered intellectual exchange and collaboration and brought together leading
scholars and practitioners from around the world. These events have facilitated
the exchange of cutting-edge ideas and provided a platform for our community
members to proceed at the forefront of their respective fields and provide
valuable insights into pressing global issues. Notable among these are the
seminars with speakers from top-notch global universities, including Princeton,
Harvard, the National University of Singapore, the University of Hong Kong,
Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Fudan University. The annual CBER
Forum on Climate Change and Business Innovation was another well-received
highlight with around 200 attendees, featuring Nobel Laureate Robert F. Engle
and other prominent figures discussing sustainable business practices.
Regarding
initiatives, CBER has successfully established new funds, such as the Yu Yu
Faculty Global Engagement Fund and the Yu Yu Student Exchange Empowerment Fund.
These funds are designed to provide our students and faculty with invaluable
global perspectives imported by NYU Stern faculty and PhD candidates and
opportunities to build unique networks between the two institutions.
In
communication and engagement, CBER has made significant strides. The 6th
Shanghai Marketing Science Salon and the Business Frontier Talks have strengthened
our ties with Chinese universities, expatriate organizations, and industry
partners. The CUHK Business student group's orientation experience at NYU
Shanghai has led to a partnership between the two universities. Hosting the
visit from Insper, Brazil's leading business school, offered students from
Latin America firsthand knowledge of the American university experience in
China. The newly launched column "567讲消费" is an insightful and impactful platform that
delves into the evolving dynamics of consumer behavior and market trends in
China.
In
conclusion, the past academic year has been a testament to CBER's dedication to
advancing business education and research. Our accomplishments have not only
contributed to the academic community but have also had a broader impact. As we
look ahead, we are excited about the opportunities to continue our mission and
further our center's growth and influence in the years to come.
Sincerely,
Chen Yuxin
Distinguished
Global Professor of Business
Director,
Center for Business Education and Research
This past year has been marked by
innovative initiatives at CBER, reflecting our dedication to fostering an
environment of innovation, global engagement, and academic rigor at NYU
Shanghai.
New Funds Established: We are proud to announce the
establishment of the Yu Yu Faculty Global Engagement Fund and the Yu Yu Student
Exchange Empowerment Fund, active from January 2024 to January 2027. These
funds are instrumental in providing our faculty and students with valuable
global perspectives and opportunities to build unparalleled networks with NYU
Stern. NYU Stern senior professor Ari Ginsberg, Jiawei Zhang, and Yakov Amihud
are among the first invitees to visit NYU Shanghai in 2024. These efforts, in
turn, have significantly enhanced our global reach and impact.
Annual Forum on Climate Change and Business Innovation:
On June 02, 2024, we hosted the CBER annual forum themed "Climate Change
and Business Innovation," co-organized with the NYU Shanghai Volatility
Institute. This year, the forum resumed in-person format after a four-year
hiatus. It featured prominent speakers such as Robert F. Engle, 2003 Nobel
Laureate in Economics, Xiaoming Lai, Chairman of Shanghai Environment and
Energy Exchange, and distinguished guest speakers, focusing on business
innovations related to climate change, providing critical insights into current
trends and prospects.
International Collaboration and Exchange: We have
strengthened our international collaborations through pivotal communication and
exchange events. On August 30, 2023, CBER hosted a group of students from the
Chinese University of Hong Kong's Global Business Program who visited NYU
Shanghai. The CUHK students took the opportunity to engage with our faculty
members and leadership in the provost office, including Yuxin Chen, Diane Geng,
and Raymond Ro. Furthermore, on January 15, 2024, we welcomed a student
delegation group from Insper, co-hosted by Professor Rodrigo Zeidan, fostering
further academic exchanges with students from Latin America. These efforts
underscored the importance of understanding different cultures and the global
economic landscape.
New Op-ed Column: The CBER column in Chinese, "567讲消费," embarks on intriguing
analyses of consumption trends in China. Recent articles have explored a
variety of topics, from the intersection of sports and consumer behavior
related to the Olympics to the revival of traditional Chinese culture in modern
consumption patterns. These writings are a great source for readers to learn
the dynamic and evolving nature of consumer trends in China.
CBER does not provide direct funding for academic
research because its primary mission is not centered around being a pure
'research center'. Instead, the center prioritizes the advancement of business
education and strives to enrich the business community by disseminating NYU
Shanghai's original business knowledge and research findings to diverse
stakeholders.
For example, together with the University Communication,
we published a comprehensive report on NYU Shanghai's Business and Economics
Honors Program. This symbolic program offers undergraduate students the chance
to conduct advanced research usually undertaken at the graduate level. This
includes its multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach and opportunities
to collaborate with faculty mentors on the thesis that contributes meaningful
progress to business and economics. The article was published on NYU Shanghai's
communicational platforms in both English and Chinese, with much attention
drawn from the public.
CBER's team
comprises all business faculty and staff, a few faculty members from NYU Stern,
and three external advisors. We appreciate each member's engagement and
potential contribution to the center and their intellectual and practical
assets. However, due to individualized constraints such as time conflict,
project planning span, and area of interest, we fully understand that only some
members could participate in CBER's events and initiatives this year.
Please refer
to the appendix below to learn about our current team and their
participation/contribution to CBER this year. For faculty members and external
contributors who host/co-hosted or participated in an event, their names are
marked in the color of violet in the appendix.
2.4.1. External Funding
The Yu Yu
Funds, comprising the Yu Yu Faculty Global Engagement Fund and the Yu Yu
Student Exchange Empowerment Fund, are important external funding sources
claimed by NYU Shanghai development for CBER. The CBER admin team worked with
Development and Finance in designing the fund's purpose, defining beneficial
groups, and developing use guidelines.
These funds
are designated to support academic and research activities, with specific
allocations for international travel, accommodations, research resources, and
discretionary use for invited NYU Stern faculty members and students. The
budgets are part of a comprehensive financial plan to facilitate international
academic exchange and research visits in business between NYU Stern students
and NYU Shanghai.
2.4.2. Collaborative Grant Projects
CBER is not positioned as a "research center" and does not actively seek research grants.
CBER
operates beyond the conventional model of a "research center," serving
as a platform rather than directly funding faculty research through grants.
Consequently, we have never required our affiliated faculty to recognize the
center's support in their work.
2.6.1. Postdocs and graduate
students in training
n/a.
2.6.2. How does the center
contribute to teaching
and other educational activities at NYU Shanghai?
Overall, CBER
contributes to the university's educational landscape by providing a platform
through various means, including business research seminars, business frontier
talk series, CBER annual forum, and engagement with the broader business
community. These activities are designed to enhance the academic environment
and provide valuable learning opportunities for students and faculty. Some key
contributions include:
The center
organizes and hosts numerous research seminars on topics in business, finance,
management, and marketing. These events feature presentations by faculty
members and guest speakers from prestigious institutions, fostering an
environment of academic exchange and collaboration.
We host a
wealth of guest lectures and forum presentations on state-of-the-art topics
such as climate change, business innovation, and sustainability. These events
provide students with insights into current trends and challenges in the
business world and opportunities to engage with leading experts and
practitioners.
Meanwhile, CBER
engages with renowned external institutes through various events, including
delegation visits and an exchange program. These activities are designed to promote
cross-cultural understanding and academic collaboration.
2.7.
Engagement and Impact
2.7.1. Center
Visibility
In 2023-2024, the center
organized a variety of initiatives and activities as outlined in the provided
appendix that have boosted our visibility. In particular:
The center's invitation and
hosting of prominent figures have not only provided a platform for cutting-edge
discussions but have also attracted attention from the academic community and
beyond. CBER's regular research seminars and academic salons, exemplified by
"The 6th Marketing Science Salon of Shanghai Universities," have
facilitated knowledge sharing and collaboration, reinforcing CBER's reputation
as a discussion platform.
Furthermore, CBER's commitment to
staying at the forefront of business education and research is further
highlighted by its Annual Forum and Business Frontier Talks, which feature
experts discussing current business topics. The active involvement of NYU
Shanghai's senior leadership, underscores the center's efforts within the
university's ecosystem. This leadership engagement, coupled with the
establishment of exchange programs funded by the "Yu Yu Faculty Global
Engagement Fund" and "Yu Yu Student Exchange Empowerment Fund,"
showcases CBER's dedication to fostering overseas connections and visibility.
Through coverage of its events,
programs, and faculty work across both the university-level and center-level
channels, CBER's presence has largely broadened its reach and solidified its
influence. Namely, the article on NYU Shanghai's Business and Economics Honors
Program: Tackling Research at the Graduate Level, and the recent article column
on consumption trends in China, "567讲消费".
These attempts provide a medium for CBER to engage with the broader public,
promoting business education and research life at NYU Shanghai, as well as
analyzing and interpreting real market dynamics.
2.7.2. Scholarly Exchanges
2.7.2.1. Notable Center-hosted Events

2.7.2.2. Notable Center Visitors
1)
Ari Ginsberg
NYU Stern Professor of Entrepreneurship and Management Ari Ginsberg
visited CBER under the sponsorship of the Yu Yu Faculty Global Engagement Fund,
endorsed by his distinguished academic background and contributions to the
field of entrepreneurship and management. Professor Ginsberg was the former
Chair of the Management and Organizations Department and Director of the
Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. He holds an Affiliate
Professor appointment in the Technology Innovation and Management Department at
NYU's Tandon School of Engineering, where he previously served as Academic
Director of the Management of Technology Master of Science Program.
Professor Ginsberg's expertise in entrepreneurship and management,
particularly in the context of climate technology startups, enriched the
discussions at CBER's 2024 Annual Forum "Climate Change and Business
Innovation."His insights into the landscape of climate tech, especially in
NYC, provided new perspectives on how businesses can innovate in response to
climate change. His encouragement of cross-disciplinary and cross-sector
collaboration aligns with CBER's mission to foster an integrated approach to
research and problem-solving for the long-term good of society.
2)
Yacine
Ait-Sahalia
Yacine Ait-Sahalia is the Otto Hack 1903 Professor of Finance and Economics
at Princeton University. His primary area of research is financial
econometrics. He was the inaugural director of the Bendheim Center for Finance
at Princeton University. Professor Ait-Sahalia presented a research seminar
titled Asset Pricing in An Economy with Changing Sentiment and Price Feedback
to the CBER community.
His primary research area, financial econometrics, encourages an
interdisciplinary approach essential for addressing complex financial phenomena
and understanding and predicting market dynamics. His paper suggests new
insights into asset pricing models incorporating changing sentiment and price
feedback. Such research enriches the knowledge of market behavior and has
practical implications for investment strategies and financial decision-making.
During his visit, multiple one-on-one meetings were scheduled between him and
the junior faculty members at NYU Shanghai Business. That was an invaluable
opportunity for our young faculty to network with a leading figure in the
field, potentially leading to future collaborations and enhancing each other's
research profile.
3)
Lola Woetzel
Dr. Lola Woetzel will fully join NYU Shanghai in Fall 2024 as a Visiting
Professor in Global China Studies and Business. Before this academic
appointment, she engaged with CBER in contributing to the intelligence aspect
of CBER's annual forum and designing a lecture series for the coming semester.
Her presence would elevate the profile of events and discussions at NYU
Shanghai, attracting more attention and participation from the community and
beyond. Through lectures, seminars, or workshops, Dr.Woetzel could enrich the
intellectual environment by bringing diverse viewpoints and experiences,
offering opportunities for mentorship and guidance to students, and helping
them navigate their academic and professional paths.
As a fierce figure in life and professionalism, Dr. Lola Woetzel is a
senior partner emerita of McKinsey & Company. She was a director of the
McKinsey Global Institute and led McKinsey's Cities Special Initiative. As one
of McKinsey's leaders in developing its Asia practice, Dr. Woetzel opened the
Shanghai location in 1995 and has been a resident since then. She has led
research on China, Asia, and global economic and business trends and has
extensive experience developing strategies and organizations for companies and
government institutions.
2.8. Other Significant
Development
A study
report on "The facts and numbers of the professional degree master
education in China" was written by CBER in Spring 2024. The report
provides insights into the professional degree master's education market in China,
a source to understand this sector's demand, competition, and opportunities. An
understanding of this market can help the center tailor its offerings to
discover potential needs. We can leverage the information and data provided in
the report to enhance CBER's strategic planning, foster partnerships, and
ultimately increase revenue for the long haul.
