Following a successful Orientation on June 1st, new students from the NYU Stern-NYU Shanghai Master’s programs Class of 2025 launched right into classes at NYU Stern. From the start of June until mid August, students engaged in intensive coursework, company visits across many different industries, and social events designed to help them explore the city and get to know their classmates.

Academics

Students in all four programs enrolled in 13.5 credits of foundational courses taught by leading faculty from NYU Stern. In addition to lectures, faculty weaved in simulations, case discussions, and engaging debate to help students understand and master the course content. Outside of the classroom during casual lunch meetings and office hours, students met with the program academic directors and capstone directors to share their academic interests and career goals, ask questions, learn about their research, and seek advice.

Jiawei L., MSQF ‘25, shared that the summer semester was intensive, but the workload was manageable thanks to his classmates and faculty: “I found this summer both challenging and rewarding. Although there is really intense work, learning in an environment with classmates from diverse backgrounds has been incredibly enriching. I particularly enjoyed Professor Anjolein’s Corporate Finance course and deeply appreciate her passion for teaching and her dedication to helping us with our studies. She consistently provided detailed feedback, which allowed us to more accurately identify our learning directions and improve our understanding and application skills.”

Career Development & Company Visits

In addition to academic development, career development is a central part of the Master’s experience. Starting this summer, resources and services provided by the NYU Shanghai Center for Career Development (CCD) helped students begin to explore career options, hone their resume, and prepare for the fall recruitment season. During the CCD’s visit to Stern in June, students completed self-assessments and engaged in one-on-one advising sessions with career coaches, where they discussed their previous work experience, future career ambitions, and started building strategies to improve their resume and start the job search process. Students also participated in workshops that focused on technical interview skills and career readiness skills, and joined the distinguished industry speaker series to learn from professionals working in different industries.

To learn more about US corporate culture and different industries, students visited a variety of local companies where they got to meet with experts ranging from senior executives to junior-level professionals. Companies included American Express, Deutsche Bank, Estee Lauder, Google, and Healthfirst.

Remarked Tyler L, MSOMS ‘25: “The company visits to Google and American Express were great opportunities to connect with Stern alumni and better understand how we can leverage our NYU degrees and network in our careers. It was so much fun touring their impressive offices and hearing about their personal and professional experiences at such renowned companies.”

Social Events & Cohort Leader Events

Outside of the classroom, students explored NYC and learned about American culture. In June, students went on a walking tour in Manhattan’s Chinatown where they visited historic sites and learned about the history of the neighborhood and the Chinese American population. Later in the month, students joined the Circle Line Sightseeing Boat Cruise tour, seeing many famous landmarks on both the Hudson and East Rivers, including the Statue of Liberty, while enjoying the beautiful views of Manhattan and Brooklyn. In July, students watched the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays in a baseball game at the famed Yankee Stadium, and then in August, end of summer celebrations began, including ice cream from the Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Truck parked on the plaza outside of Stern during a study break during finals week.

Throughout the summer, students joined faculty and staff for multiple community lunches on campus, where they tried food from different cuisines, including Mexican, Mediterranean, Korean, and Italian sandwiches, and shared stories and feedback about their experience at Stern. This camaraderie was complimented by events planned by student cohort leaders, including bowling and meals off campus designed to help students get to know their peers.
