David Maguire is Professor of Practice in Journalism at NYU Shanghai. He has developed and taught several courses: Journalism Methods and Practice, Newsroom, Journalism and Society in China, and the interdisciplinary course, Storytelling with Data Visualisation. He also teaches Writing as Inquiry and Perspectives on Humanities in the Writing Program.

Prior to joining NYU Shanghai, he was Associate Professor in the double degree Master’s programme at Fudan University School of Journalism, in collaboration with Sciences Po and London School of Economics and Political Science. Before that he was Associate Professor and Academic Chair of Journalism at Murdoch University in Australia. In these roles, he developed and taught courses in areas including news and feature writing, investigative reporting, journalism and society with a focus on China, media law and ethics, data visualization, communication and media management, and applied marketing practices.

In addition to academic life, David had a 30+ year career as a journalist, editor and business manager for news publications in Australia, Hong Kong and China.
