Hua Shen is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at New York University Shanghai, jointly affiliated with the Tandon School of Engineering at New York University. She was previously a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Washington, affiliated with the Information School and the Responsibility in AI Systems and Experiences (RAISE) Center, and also completed a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Michigan. She earned her Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University from 2019 to 2023.
Her research lies at the intersection of Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), spanning natural language processing, machine learning, speech processing, and computer vision. Specifically, her work focuses on bidirectional human–AI alignment: enabling humans to interactively explain, evaluate, and collaborate with AI systems, while integrating human feedback and values to improve AI systems.
Hua Shen has been recognized as a Rising Star in Data Science, awarded by University of Chicago, UC San Diego, Stanford University in 2023. Her work has received multiple awards, including Best Paper and Best Interactive Event at AIED 2024, Best Demo at CSCW 2023, and a Best Paper Honorable Mention at IUI 2023, as well as Google Research Science Conference Scholarships.
