On Sunday, August 17, 2014, new students and parents filled the dining hall of the new academic building for the convocation ceremony to welcome the Class of 2018.
Assistant Dean of Students David Pe acted as the Master of Ceremonies, introducing all of the speakers, including Chancellor Yu Lizhong, Vice Chancellor Jeff Lehman, Student Body President Roxanne Roman, Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen, Interim Dean of Arts and Sciences David Fitch, Associate Vice Chancellor Hongxia Liu, and the new Dean of Students, Charlene Visconti.
The convocation ceremony also included performances from some of the sophomore students at NYU Shanghai. Sherrie Zhuang and Catherine Gong, played traditional Chinese music on the erhu and pipa respectively. Later, nearing the end of the ceremony, the audience cheered loudly after a performance of “Tong Hua” by Kiril Bolonitkov, Ronak Trivedi, and Li Siyao.
In her speech, Student Body President Roxanne Roman voiced something special that the Class of 2018 has to look forward to: “You will meet people who teach you how to live, how to laugh, and how to love.”
