On May 1, 2015, the NYU Shanghai Fencing Team competed in the ADIDAS 2015 Chinese Fencing Association Club League National Tournament at SECA Academy.
Representing the women's foil were sophomores Veronica Hernandez and Christina Erwin, who placed third and eighth, respectively. Both delivered impressive finishes in the individual Women's 17+ Foil competition. Hernandez, who won bronze, fell to the second seed in her semi-finals bout for silver after breezing past pools and DE's.
"Just a phenomenal job by Veronica," said Assistant Foil Coach Joe Wu. "Her efforts surely paid off after months of hard work and intense practice. She shows great potential. I hope she continues to fence throughout her college career."
On the men's side, NYU Shanghai sophomores James Tang and Oliver Barry finished 14th and 27th, respectively, in the individual Men's 17+ Foil competition. Tang fell to the first seed after reaching Top 16, while Barry lost 14-15 la belle to the sixth seed in a close match.
"Our men's team also fenced very well," said Wu. "We went head-to-head with one of the best fencers in the nation. I am very proud of them!"
The tournament, which lasted over 15 hours, featured 444 reputable fencers (270 men and 174 women) from China, the United States, Singapore, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, and more.
