Maria E. Montoya Appointed NYU Shanghai Dean of Arts and Sciences

Vice Chancellor Lehman issued a statement announcing the appointment of Maria E. Montoya as Dean of Arts and Sciences, effective June 1, 2016.  In the announcement, Lehman said, "Maria has been a tenured member of NYU's history faculty for almost a decade, after having previously held tenure at the University of Michigan. Her research addresses a range of issues concerning the development of the American West, particularly issues around land and water development, as well as the experiences of workers, women, and ethnic minorities. She has also just completed a forthcoming U.S. history textbook, Global Americans: A History of the United States. A popular teacher and invited lecturer, Maria is also an experienced academic administrator, having served as the Director of Latina/o Studies at the University of Michigan as well as in the NYU history department for four years as Director of Undergraduate Studies. Maria also knows NYU Shanghai well, as she taught "The History of Water" with us as an affiliated professor during the 2014-15 academic year.


Commenting on her appointment, Montoya said, "I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as the next dean of Arts and Sciences. NYU Shanghai is a special place, and I am so pleased and excited to be returning to work with the students and faculty at this wonderful institution."
