NYU’s Men's and Women's Basketball teams will visit Shanghai for a doubleheader against Shanghai Jiao Tong University on Friday, August 16.
The 2024 Buick Campus Invitational offers an opportunity to unite student athletes from two of the world’s top universities to interact with and learn from each other through the universal language of sports. The two matches will kick off at Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Minhang Campus at 6pm and will be aired live on ESPNU, Great Sports, and Tencent Sports.
“Athletic competition is a marvelous way for young people from different countries to become friends,” said NYU Shanghai Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman. “We are delighted to have NYU’s basketball teams coming to China for these friendly games against their counterparts from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.”
This will be the first time for the NYU Violets to travel to Shanghai. Upon their arrival on August 11, the teams will embark on a week-long cultural exchange, visiting Shanghai landmarks and immersing themselves in cultural activities. The student athletes will experience traditional Chinese activities such as dragon dances and dumpling making with the NYU Shanghai community.
Aside from the matches at Jiao Tong University, the teams will also play warm up matches at NYU Shanghai’s gymnasium with two local professional teams, the Shanghai Stars Worldwide and Shanghai Swordfish, on August 12. East China Normal University has invited the NYU Men’s team for a match on August 14 at their Minhang Campus.
“Sports has always been a special area of people-to-people exchanges between the United States and China,” said NYU Shanghai Chancellor Tong Shijun. “We sincerely hope that the NYU basketball teams’ visit to China will make a new and wonderful chapter of Sino-US relations.”
