NYU Shanghai faculty have secured funding for 14 projects in the 2026 centralized funding cycle of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), with an overall success rate of 32.6%, more than double that of this year’s overall funding rate of 14.8%.
The winning grants were among 69,563 projects funded by NSFC, selected from 469,429 applications during the application period. The grants were awarded by six NSFC departments—Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Engineering and Materials Sciences, Information Sciences, Management Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Sciences.
The 14 NYU Shanghai projects that were awarded grants include six General Program projects and eight are Young Scientists Fund (Category C) projects.
“The funded projects span a wide range of disciplines, reflecting the breadth and vitality of NYU Shanghai’s interdisciplinary research ecosystem,” said NYU Shanghai Provost and Distinguished Global Professor of Public Health Wu Bei. “While NYU Shanghai has a relatively small faculty, our success rate in securing National Natural Science Foundation of China funding is strong. This makes the result especially meaningful and speaks to the strength of our faculty in pursuing high-quality, cutting-edge research, as well as their sustained commitment to their scholarly work.”
Wu highlighted the coordinated efforts from experts and support teams throughout the application process. “Behind every successful project are years of scholarly work and the collective efforts of many people,” she said. “These results are an affirmation of those efforts, and they further strengthen our confidence in continuing to foster a supportive research environment where faculty can pursue original, high-quality research.”
