NYU Shanghai Launches New MA Program in TESOL

Jun 8 2017

NYU Shanghai has launched a new Master of Arts program in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) in collaboration with the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, offering students a unique opportunity to study in both Shanghai and New York City.

The joint program adds to NYU Shanghai’s growing number of graduate degree offerings. The TESOL program, like NYU Shanghai’s global Master of Social Work program, jointly offered with the NYU Silver School of Social Work, and Shanghai-track PhD program, jointly offered with the NYU Graduate School of Arts & Science, leverages NYU Shanghai’s unparalleled platform for research and study in China along with the resources of the NYU global network to provide an incomparable cross-continental experience for students.

Here, the Graduate and Special Programs Office explains more details about the new program:

What are the goals for the MA program in TESOL?

The program will help students to deepen their expertise as English teachers for children and adolescents, from kindergarten through high school, and help students advance their leadership skills in and out of the classroom.

The program also aims to expand upon the foundational skills students will have already developed as English teachers in China and further enhance their knowledge and professional skills in language teaching methodology and research.

What will the new program offer?

Students will receive training to integrate current language acquisition theories with best practices in teaching and learn how to develop effective curricula for K-12 students. They will expand their repertoire of English teaching methodology, tailored to local needs, and use linguistic and sociolinguistic knowledge of English to navigate the connections between language and culture.

Throughout the program, students will take courses both on the NYU Shanghai campus and online. At the end of the first year, students will also participate in a summer immersion module in New York City. Upon completion, students will receive a globally respected degree from New York University recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

How will students learn?

The TESOL program is grounded in pedagogical methods from the United States and tailored to Chinese contexts. The two-year curriculum, taught fully in English, enables students to learn from American-trained NYU Steinhardt and NYU Shanghai faculty who have expertise in second and foreign language acquisition research, methodology and years of experience working with Chinese students.

The curriculum model and schedule are designed to accommodate an educator’s full-time job with courses offered on evenings and weekends. Applicants who are currently teaching or looking to return to the field with new aptitudes will benefit from this program.

Who should apply?

The program is designed for English teachers who have at least one year of experience teaching English in a K-12 setting, have obtained a bachelor’s degree in English, linguistics, or a related field, and are comfortable taking immersive courses taught entirely in English.
