NYUSH Freshmen Elect First-Ever Student Government

Oct 30 2013

On the 30th of October, the student body at NYUSH gathered in the lobby of the Geography building for the student government elections announcement party. During the past few weeks, over 40 freshmen campaigned for 14 positions in NYUSH’s first student government. These students campaigned for positions created by a student parliamentary board and established in the school’s constitution. The unique composition of the student body, with students from countries all over the world, led to the creation of three Vice President positions, each representing a specific demographic. The winners of the race for executive board positions were as follows: Kenny Song (U.S.A.) for President; José Antonio Cabrera Sánchez (Spain) for International Vice President; Kiki Shen (China) for Chinese Vice President; Rima Mehta (U.S.A.) for American Vice President; Fang Siyao (China) for Executive Secretary; and Li Siyao (China) for Executive Treasurer.

The announcement of the elected positions was greeted with applause as the winners ascended the stairs to the landing in front of the Academic Resource Center. Once newly elected student government president, Kenny Song, was announced, he went to the white and purple podium to accept his official NYUSH presidential tie. He said it was "an incredible honor" that he would serve as president and help the "student government play an instrumental role in shaping this university."

After the announcements, students enjoyed New York style pizza and talked to their newly elected representatives. Shanghai native, Sun Xiao Yang, asked the government to "narrow the gap between Chinese and International students." Ronak Trivedi, an NYUSH student from New Jersey, hopes that "the new president can make the student body feel as unified as NYUAD has become.” He also hopes that the student government will "make us an example for the world on how a global community can interact and form something truly revolutionary, learning how to solve global problems."
