Spaces to Know: Center for Career Development

Whether you're a first-year or a senior, the Center for Career Development (CCD) is one place that you won’t want to miss during your time at NYU Shanghai. Career Coach Oscar Zhang says that many students may think they should come to CCD when they want to find a job or apply to grad school, but CCD can help students in a much deeper way. “We can help students think more broadly, to think about their whole life and career development,” he says.
The CCD covers 400 square meters and shares resources with NYU’s two other portal campuses. Decorated with a vibrant array of colors, from the red brick walls to the lively yellow wallpaper and the colorful throw pillows and artwork, the inviting environment features many resources that will open up the possibilities for your post-college future.
“We’re here to give them a chance to think about what they want to do for their long-term career plan,” Zhang says. “After their vision is ready, then we can provide support and resources for interview prep, resume and internships.” The first step is just to walk through the door.
Resources At Your Fingertips
The Front Desk
Come right in! Receptionists at the front desk are ready to help connect you with the resources you need, including resume and industry guides and how to make appointments with career coaches.
Student worker Florence Zhang mans the front desk during her shift, and gives a big smile to every student walking into the center. Most people come in already know what they want, she says. When it is walk-in hours, they come to revise their resume, make an appointment with career coaches, or ask about technical issues. Working at CCD has helped her feel better about her post-college plans. Her advice? “Plan ahead but don’t be anxious about the future.”
One-on-One Support: Lab Genius
Lab Geniuses are available to assist with any online resources from Monday to Friday, 10:00-18:00, in the Career Hub.These student workers can help you find online resources and share from their own experiences.
Normally we have senior students here to ask about job opportunities,” says Harvey Jiang, a sophomore student who works at the center. “But now we are getting more younger students here to ask about their resume and workshops. We keep telling all the students, even if you’re not prepared, you can come to us. We can actually help you from scratch.”
Student workers do some of the CCD’s most important outreach work. “My friends are all very anxious and lost, but [while] I don’t know yet what I want career-wise, I know I’ll be fine because I have the resources here,” says Yelena Ye, a sophomore who works at the CCD. “That’s the reason I stay here, so I can direct my friends to use these resources too.”
Career Coaches are available for one-on-one consultations with students.
One-on-One Support: Career Coaches
You can also book 30-minute one-on-one career coaching on Handshake. Our career coaches are all certified Global Career Development Facilitators. With diverse academic backgrounds and extensive training, they can provide individualized support in areas like: Career Decision Making, Four Year Plan, Global Storytelling, Intern and Work, and Mock Interviews. Walk-in hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 1:30 pm for undergraduate students, and Mondays and Wednesdays for graduate students.
“We know it can be scary and tough to start, but we are always here, always open to start the conversation. For five minutes, 10 minutes, or an appointment on Handshake, we are always here to talk with you about your career planning,” says career coach Oscar Zhang.
Career Coaches work individually with students using the Exploration-Visioning-Developing-Preparation model to find their path.
Walking into the CCD, you’ll see an overview map of the center introducing the CCD’s functions, career development goals and approaches, and global employer resources. At the main entrance, an Event Calendar displays the week's ongoing educational programs and workshops. The screen next to it scrolls to display various career resources, including one-on-one coaching appointment reservations and industry interest groups.
Across from the Front Desk, students can peruse an array of informative guides. These resources are regularly updated and include sample resumes and cover letters, interview guidelines, networking tips, information on culturally-appropriate interview attire, and graduate school application guides.
Career Hub
Pay attention to the posters! Inside the Career Hub, situated at the heart of the Center, a collection of posters have been thoughtfully arranged based on the Exploration-Visioning-Developing-Preparation (EVDP) career development model, developed by the CCD to help individuals track their progress and find relevant educational programs and workshops.
At the Career Hub you can also pick up a map of engagement opportunities that features an array of academic and cultural engagement opportunities across NYU’s three degree-granting campuses. The map provides information on major advising through the Academic Affairs office, writing and speaking consultations through the Academic Resource Center, and advising on applying for global awards. You can also learn more about student clubs, on-campus jobs and events, and career development resources offered by the library. You can pick up the maps on the tables in the Career Hub or scan the on-site QR code to get the e-version on your phone.

Online Resources: Career Lab
The Career Lab offers 24/7 online career education courses that are available anywhere at any time. These courses explore industry sectors, resumes, interviews, internships and networking.
Students can access three video libraries with over 100 videos of previous CCD events. Nine digital career toolkits are also available, including Hiration (CV writing), Big Interview (interview prep), GF Assessment (game-based assessment), CaseCoach (counseling cases), LinkedIn, Violet Network, Handshake, Interstride and GoinGlobal (global job seeking). To access these online resources, simply log into NYU BrightSpace.
Students can book rooms around the clock for in-person or remote interviews.
Interview Rooms:
Five 24/7 interview rooms are available for in-person or remote interviews. Students can book the rooms through NYU Shanghai’s space booking system.
Book Corners
In the Career Hub, browse through the collection of books available for borrowing as part of the career coaching programs. Students can scan the QR code to access or borrow these books.
