On November 11, Green Shanghai, a student organization dedicated to promoting conservation and sustainability on campus and across the city, hosted its third Trash Fashion Show at the Shanghai Himalayas Museum. The show brought NYU Shanghai’s aspiring designers, models and eco-activists together to transform trash into high fashion and raise awareness about the possibilities of recycling and sustainable development. Students walked the runway in eye-catching outfits made from everyday waste such as bubble wrap, surgical gloves, and trash bags. Daisy Bugarin ‘21 walked the runway in “A Plastic Predicament,” designed by Diana Yu ‘22 from bubble wrap. Yu said she designed the dress to remind the audience of the high volume of plastic that is consumed by humans every day. Salomon Ruiz ‘21 cut and braided compressed plastic bags and bubble wrap to create “Rouge Comme La Fleur,” modeled by Eric Shin ‘20. Both the skirt and flower decorations are made out of paper. Zhang Tianyu ‘22 models Luo Yiyang ‘22’s design of “Puzzle,”fashioned out of recycled plastic and paper. He Weiyi ‘22 and Katerina Valachova ‘22 recycled newspaper and trash bags to create this “On a Walk for Coffee” look, presented by Zhou Ning ‘22. Zheng Kai ‘21 and Tracey Lan ‘22 designed a bustier and flared skirt ensemble using paper bags and wasted plastic, modeled by Candice Li ‘22. Melody Zhang ‘22 walked the runway in her own design “We Save Us”, encouraging people to take actions against plastic pollution. The “Fragment” is modeled by Sydney Fontalvo ‘21 and designed with broken discs and wrinkled DuPont paper by Han Xinyao ‘22 and Yao Chenlan ‘22 Models and designers line up to take a final bow. The show also kicked off Green Shanghai’s Zero Waste Week running through November 12-16.
