The NYU Shanghai Art Gallery premiered the cerebral visual effects of Lu Yang Delusional Crime and Punishment—the newest video installation of Chinese artist Lu Yang, on October 17. (Photo by: NYU Shanghai) The artist is especially fascinated with the brain and takes a detached and unsentimental approach in weaving biology, neuroscience, religious studies and pop culture in her work. (Photo by: NYU Shanghai) The bulk of her work focuses on and explores science and technology, creating a unique understanding of the world through these two fields. (Photo by: NYU Shanghai) The uncanniness and detachment of Lu’s chosen imagery simulate the cold randomness offered by biological science to questions concerning the meaning of existence. (Photo by: NYU Shanghai) Immersed in playful hellfire, banners of demons and brains, and the heavy bass of a dark electronic soundtrack, audience members stand rapt before a giant screen depicting human creation via 3D printer and torturous visions of hell.
