Sep 26, members of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (DCDC) came to NYU Shanghai to lead a workshop for students enrolled in this fall’s Contemporary Dance class. The dance troupe had traveled from the US to perform at the 2018 Shanghai Dance Festival, and took time in between performances to visit and teach at local schools. Dancer Qarrianne Blayr (center), led the NYU Shanghai workshop. DCDC was founded 50 years ago in Dayton, Ohio, to create performance opportunities for dancers of color and remains rooted in the African American experience. At NYU Shanghai, dancers introduced students to Nigerian dance steps and music. DCDC’s Devin Baker (center), shows students how to convey emotion through arm movements. In addition to NYU Shanghai, DCDC also paid visits to Shanghai Normal University and Suzhou Art School. The tour in China was also sponsored by the U.S. Consulate in Shanghai. Above, Dayton dancer Robert Pulido introduces a new step. Commitment and confidence can help make your dance movements big enough to look amazing, Qarrianne Blayr and her dancer colleagues advised students. Aly Rose, Associate Arts Professor of NYU Shanghai, was delighted to welcome the Dayton dancers to her class. “We have been learning about the history of jazz dance in America and its origins in West African dance. So it was just fabulous for us to learn moves and songs from Nigeria with DCDC.” Share: Facebook Twitter Weibo All Years202420232022202120202019201820172016201520142013 Apply Club Fest & Involvement FairFeb 2 2015 NYU Alumni Executive Mentor Program LaunchJan 30 2015 DSS Winter Service Trip to CambodiaJan 27 2015 Spring 2015 Welcome Back MixerJan 27 2015 2015 CBN Shanghai Pudong New Year ForumJan 25 2015 DBS Digital Express Challenge 2015Jan 24 2015 New York and Abu Dhabi Students Take J-Term Course in ShanghaiJan 21 2015 IMA End of Semester ShowDec 15 2014 "Image Ination" ExhibitDec 11 2014 An Evening with Lang LangDec 9 2014 Sila Connection Shanghai 2014Dec 8 2014 Amethyst 2014Dec 5 2014 NYU Shanghai Volatility Institute Day with Nobel Laureate Professor Robert EngleNov 29 2014 Thanksgiving Break Hangzhou TripNov 29 2014 Fall 2014 Poetry NightNov 25 2014 Pagination « First First page ‹ Previous Previous page … 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 … Next › Next page Last » Last page
