On this page, you will find essential FAQs. You should also look out for a series of onboarding messages to be sent to your NYU email from the Graduate Semester Study Office in the weeks before the Fall semester.

When will my campus access begin?

Campus access will begin following Fall 2024 graduate student orientation. Students may not access NYU Shanghai prior to orientation.

Who is eligible for NYU Shanghai campus access?

Campus access is only open to students who:

  • are enrolled in NYU Shanghai graduate programs or the semester study away program;
  • complete all required pre-orientation protocols; and attend orientation.

Semester study away students must take and continue in all Shanghai courses offered with their program to maintain their registration and campus access; once your study away semester has started, you may not drop them.

When will Fall 2024 graduate student orientation take place?

Fall 2024 graduate student orientation will take place on Saturday, August 31, at the NYU Shanghai New Bund Campus (567 West Yangsi Road). Please understand that parents are restricted from attending orientation.

Is orientation mandatory?

Yes. Students who do not attend orientation will not gain campus access.

When and where will my courses be taught?

Semester study away courses begin the week of September 2 and are scheduled at the NYU Shanghai New Bund Campus. Classroom times and locations can be seen in Albert.

What is NYU Shanghai’s Academic Calendar?

Fall 2024 semester study away classes will begin the week of September 2 by default and end following the week of December 13. Holidays will be observed for the Mid-Autumn Festival (September 17), National Day (September 30-October 6), and Thanksgiving (November 28-29). Please note NYU Shanghai’s Academic Calendar is independent from NYU New York’s Academic Calendar. If you are taking NYU New York courses remotely, those courses will be on NYU New York’s Academic Calendar. Note that on November 3, daylight saving time ends, meaning that clocks are turned backward by one hour in the United States.

Fall 2024 is my first semester as a NYU student. How can I receive an ID card?

If you have not done so, upload your photo to photoid.nyu.edu. Your ID card will be distributed by NYU Shanghai during orientation.

Are there residential facilities at NYU Shanghai?

The Jingyao Residence Halls are located at 533 Jiming Road in the Houtan area. The NYU Shanghai New Bund Campus is 3 kilometers away or about a 10-minute drive.

 

At NYU Shanghai, living in on-campus housing is not mandatory for graduate students. Unoccupied rooms in NYU Shanghai’s undergraduate residential facility might be offered to graduate students on a space-available basis. Just like they would in New York, many graduate students will desire the flexibility to find and arrange their own off-campus housing. The city of Shanghai features an abundance of housing options to suit various lifestyles and budgets.

Does NYU Shanghai provide a shuttle bus from the Residence Hall to Campus?

NYU Shanghai Public Safety organizes a regular shuttle bus service between the Jingyao Residence Hall and the campus during the academic semester. These buses typically operate from 7:30 AM to 11:00 PM. The regular shuttle bus schedule will be announced at the beginning of each semester by the Department of Public Safety.

 
What should I know about traveling to Shanghai?

Students who are Chinese Nationals or Mainland entry permit holders from Macau, Taiwan, or Hong Kong should not require university documentation to clear immigration and gain entry to China. 

 

All other students can apply for Chinese visas with the support of the NYU Office of Global Services (OGS) and NYU Shanghai Office of Student Mobility.

 

OGS in New York will initiate the visa process, collecting all immigration documents from students and passing them to the Shanghai Student Mobility team. Shanghai Student Mobility will then work with the local Chinese embassy/consulate to process and send documents back to OGS.

 

Incoming international students will need to hold a passport valid for at least 6 months for entry. Students are advised to begin their visa application at their earliest convenience but no more than 90 days before the start of the Fall semester since the visa processing time may vary from country to country. International students who are traveling to Shanghai are advised to contact OGS in New York directly. They are also welcomed to contact the Shanghai team via shanghai.student-mobility@nyu.edu.

 
How will getting a student visa to the United States work?

Participating students should apply to Get a US Visa at least 3-4 months before the start of the Spring semester so that they can have their immigration documents to travel to New York after the Fall semester at NYU Shanghai concludes. If you already have your I-20 and need it updated to reflect your Spring entry to the US, please submit the Entry Plan eform so OGS can adjust your document.

 
Will there be any difference in the cost of tuition?

Tuition will be the same whether you study in New York City or in Shanghai. 

May I complete my entire program at NYU Shanghai? Besides my first semester, will there be any other time during which I could study at NYU Shanghai?

Students may only complete one semester (their first semester) at NYU Shanghai with the remainder of their degree to be completed in New York starting with the Spring term. Studying at NYU Shanghai may only be undertaken in one’s first semester. There is no option to study at NYU Shanghai in subsequent terms.

NYU Shanghai Textbook Policy

It is the policy of NYU Shanghai to purchase required textbooks in bulk in advance with the cost applied to students' bursar bills. This is done as a service to students for a number of reasons, including to ensure that textbooks are available in a timely manner and to ensure compliance with applicable copyright laws. NYU Shanghai works with approved vendors, prioritizes e-textbooks, and strives to minimize cost. Students are charged at cost, and therefore no profit is made by NYU Shanghai.

If you are taking a course for which every student must have an individual copy of a required textbook, you will be notified of the related charges prior to the course. If the textbook is provided as an e-version and you have a non-pirated hard copy, you may contact the Graduate Semester Study Office about verifying the hard copy and avoiding the e-version charge.

Health Insurance Information for Semester Study Students

Semester study students will be automatically waived out of the Wellfleet Plan and enrolled in the NYU-sponsored GeoBlue health insurance plan for the Fall semester. The cost of the GeoBlue plan will be covered by the Student Health Center; students will not be charged for the GeoBlue insurance. Their Bursar account will be adjusted accordingly to reflect these changes.
