FAQs
What should I bring to my tutoring session with a Writing and Speaking Learning Assistant?

When you come to a tutoring session, you can bring the following:

  • Copies of your most current draft (if applicable)
  • Assignment guidelines from your instructor
  • Feedback from your instructor (if applicable)
  • Notes and readings relevant to the assignment
  • Questions, concerns, and issues you want to address
Can I make an appointment with a Writing & Speaking Learning Assistant?

No. WSLA tutoring is available on a drop-in basis only. Please refer to the WSLAs' tutoring schedule and visit the ARC during the posted office hours. You are welcome to ask the Information Assistant at the ARC front desk for help in locating a tutor or understanding the schedule. If no WSLA is available to assist you at the moment, you may be asked to wait in the ARC waiting area.

What if 20 minutes isn't long enough to address all my questions?

If there are no other students waiting, you may extend your session by an additional 20 minutes. However, we do not recommend staying with the same Writing & Speaking LA for more than three consecutive sessions. It’s important to take the time to process and apply what you've learned before seeking further assistance.

How many drop-in sessions can I have per day?

You can attend up to three consecutive sessions or a maximum of six sessions total per day. You are strongly encouraged to take the time to process and apply what you've learned before seeking further assistance.

I am a study-away student from another NYU campus, can I use the Writing & Speaking Learning Assistant's service?

Yes. The ARC serves all undergraduate students, including inbound study-away students, enrolled in NYU Shanghai courses. These courses typically have course codes beginning with "SHU." If you need support for classes offered by other NYU global sites, you are strongly encouraged to use the corresponding writing center's services or seek support from your professor directly.
