Academic Workshops

The ARC offers various workshops on a broad range of topics from writing to time management to test preparation. We offer both asynchronous online academic skills workshops and in-person academic skills workshops.

Academic Skills Workshops

Workshops are often offered in-person. If a workshop is inconveniently timed for your schedule, you can check out our asynchronous materials for useful information. Feel free to book an appointment on NYU Connect with a Global Writing & Speaking Fellow to receive one-on-one support covering any of these workshop topics.

Writing and Reading Skills Workshops

The writing and reading skills workshops are designed to support students in developing essential academic skills. These workshops cover key aspects of writing, including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, etc., while also offering targeted guidance on reading strategies such as skimming and close reading. During midterms and finals, the ARC also hosts write-in sessions, providing students with on-site support to help them stay on track and meet their deadlines. For specific workshop topics and information, please check and RSVP on Engage.

Speaking and Listening Skills Workshops

The speaking and listening skills workshops provide students with targeted support to enhance their communication abilities. These workshops focus on key areas such as presentation skills, seminar participation, interview techniques, and listening strategies. While these workshops are open to all students, they are especially beneficial for those enrolled in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) 100 and 101, a two-semester core curriculum course designed to help students develop critical academic English communication skills. For specific workshop topics and information, please check and RSVP on Engage.

Academic Skills Coaching Workshops

The ARC offers a series of interactive workshops on skills that are important for success in college and beyond, such as how to manage your time, how to communicate effectively, and how to reflect. Please find more information about these workshops on this webpage.

GPS Workshop Series

The GPS Workshop Series offers dedicated support to students enrolled in Global Perspectives on Society, a foundational core course in the first semester of their first year. These workshops focus on developing key skills essential for the course, equipping students to thrive academically. Additionally, students can attend supplemental support sessions to help them prepare effectively for their finals. For the latest calendar of GPS workshops and events, please check Engage.

New Student Orientation Series

As part of New Student Orientation, students are required to complete an Academic Integrity Tutorial and attend two workshops: Joining a Scholarly Discussion and College Expectations and Communication. These components are designed to help students build a strong academic foundation for their future studies. Please see below for further details.

Academic Integrity Tutorial

This online tutorial can help students identify values underlying Academic Integrity, develop an understanding of NYU Shanghai's Academic Integrity policy, and apply values and NYU Shanghai's Academic Integrity policy to various real-life scenarios.

Joining a Scholarly Discussion

What does "entering into a scholarly discussion" mean? What is a "citation"? How to "incorporate evidence", both in writing and speaking? This workshop prepares you for the scholarly life at NYU Shanghai and helps you start the journey of becoming a young rising scholar.

College Expectations and Communication

What is expected of a first-year student? What are the communication norms at the college level? What support is available at the Academic Resource Center to aid students in their academic journey? This workshop is designed to help students transition smoothly from high school to college and equips them with essential skills to navigate academic and social challenges effectively.
