No. This course is open to adult learners of all backgrounds and experience levels with an interest in the topic. It is not necessary to have prior expertise to enroll.
Students are expected to be comfortable in an English-language learning environment, but no formal proof of proficiency is required at registration. Chinese subtitles powered by Kudo AI will be available for those who would benefit from them.
Section I will feature 24 hours of instruction through lectures, case studies, and faculty-facilitated interaction in a large-class environment with a general audience in mind. Section II will feature 12 hours of deeper study, discussion, and faculty-led activities in a small-group seminar setting. Students with prior familiarity or experience in the subject may benefit the most from Section II, but this is not absolutely required.
Section I classes will take place on August 2, 3, 9, and 10 with 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. morning sessions and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. afternoon sessions. Section II classes will take place on August 4, 5, 7, and 8 with 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. evening sessions.
Yes. As soon as you have successfully completed the Registration Form and paid the Section I course fee, your enrollment is confirmed.
Students can register for Section I only or for Section I and II. Section II builds upon Section I.
The program fee covers tuition, materials, your certificate of completion, and campus access privileges.
Students who withdraw before two weeks from the start of class will receive a 100% refund. Students who withdraw within two weeks from the start of class will receive a 50% refund. No refunds are permitted after the start of class. To request a refund, please email shanghai.opencourses@nyu.edu.
Students are responsible for their own accommodations and meals during the program.
A full participant list with contact information for each of your classmates is provided on the first day and everyone will be encouraged to keep in touch. All students are also invited to an optional dinner reception on the Wednesday of the program.
Completion of a course does not grant NYU alumni status. However, participants will be considered alumni of the Open Courses program and have access to unique opportunities through this community.
Currently, the only discount available is the early-bird registration discount.
Open Courses are not eligible for credit toward a NYU degree, but participants receive a NYU Shanghai Certificate of Completion upon finishing.
There is no required homework. However, each class meeting will have light supplementary materials (short readings, thought-provoking questions, etc.) which students are welcomed to review and consider in advance.
